RTO- Number plate rules and dimensions in India

Have you ever been stopped by Police saying your number plate is not as per standard. Here is the specification of number plate which is legally acclaimed in India.

Dimension and rules for Two wheeler number plate in India

1. Motor Cycles, Bikes and 2 Wheelers - 

Front Number Plate Dimension: 

Minimum dimension

Height of Alphabetical letter -3 CM

Height of Numeral - 3 CM

Width of Alphabetical letter - 0.5 CM

Width of Numeral - 0.5 CM

Space Between Letters: Nominal 

Rear Number Plate Dimension: 

Minimum dimension

Height of Alphabetical letter -3.5 CM

Height of Numeral - 4 CM

Width of Alphabetical letter - 0.7 CM

Width of Numeral - 0.5 CM

Space Between Letters: Nominal

Height of Number Plate - Does not matter

Position of Number Plate : Should be visible prominently.

Plate Type: Metal . Painting on automobile itself is invalid. 

IND Mandate: Not mandatory in many states. Hence refer to respective RTO sites.
